Ulama Council of Malawi has strongly condemned recent incidents of mob justice in Chikwawa and Nsanje, where individuals accused of witchcraft were brutally murdered by community members.
A statement signed by Secretary General of the organisation, Sheikh Muslim Abbas Vinjenje, has described the killings as unjust and un-Islamic, reminding Malawians that justice must only be administered through lawful authorities.
The Council has cited Qur’an 5:32 which says, “Whoever kills an innocent soul, it is as if he had killed all of humanity.”
The council has also cited a Hadith that warns, “Whoever is killed unjustly, his blood is on the hands of those who killed him.”
Sheikh Abbas Vinjenje emphasized that anger and suspicion should never replace due process.
He said People have taken the law into their own hands, which is against Islamic teachings based on the Qur’an and the Prophet’s guidance and depicts as an act of ignorance.
He has since urged all Malawians to respect the country’s laws and allow justice to be carried out by rightful authorities.
This condemnation comes amid growing concern over vigilante killings linked to witchcraft allegations, which human rights groups say such acts undermine the rule of law and deepen fear in rural communities.
