Malawi has completed construction works, on its side, of a 400-kilovolt electricity interconnector with Mozambique.

According to a statement signed by Energy Secretary, Elvis Thodi, Malawi is now finalizing arrangements for commercial power trading

The Malawi-Mozambique (MOMA) interconnector will connect Malawi to the Southern African Power Pool through Mozambique.

The connection will help expand the country’s access to electricity and strengthen regional power trading.

The Ministry of Energy said outstanding works on the Mozambican side, including a transmission line crossing the Zambezi River, have been completed after delays linked to a fatal workplace accident.

The interconnector was energised on August 8 and successfully hot-commissioned, the ministry said.

Malawi, Mozambique and other power market partners are now finalising tariffs and other arrangements ahead of the start of commercial electricity trading.

The Ministry of Energy said it expects the interconnector to strengthen Malawi’s electricity supply and improve the country’s participation in the regional power market.
