Several leaders from different organisations have spent a night at Mzuzu Urban Health Centre, commonly known as Mapale, in Mzuzu, in a show of solidarity with mothers who endure sleepless nights while waiting for maternal healthcare.

The leaders, who included Malawi Health Equity Network (MHEN) Executive Director George Jobe, WaterAid Malawi Country Director, Peter Phiri, and WOLREC Country Director, Maggie Kathewera Banda, did this as one way of taking part in the 2026 Mzimba North Mothers’ Fun Run Sleepover Challenge.

Speaking on behalf of the participants, Jobe said the overnight stay was intended to give the leaders a glimpse of the challenges faced by women seeking maternal healthcare, while also raising support for improved maternity services in Mzimba North.

“If mothers can spend sleepless nights waiting for care, I can spend one night standing with them. One night. One cause. Lives saved,” said Jobe.

The Sleepover Challenge is part of the annual Mothers’ Fun Run, which mobilises resources for maternal and child health.

Funds raised this year will support maternity services, essential medical supplies and infrastructure improvements at health centres across Mzimba North.

The initiative is also linked to the Time to Deliver campaign, which advocates for safe and dignified maternal healthcare, including access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene in health facilities.

MHEN has since called on individuals and organisations to donate towards the initiative, saying stronger support for health facilities is critical to ensuring safer motherhood.
