Government Dismisses Reports Of Devaluation

The Malawi Government has dismissed reports suggesting that it is discussing the devaluation of the Malawi Kwacha with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

In a statement released on October 8, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr. Shadric Namalomba said the issue is not part of the ongoing negotiations for a new financial support programme.

In the statement Dr. Namalomba, said reports that the government was negotiating the devaluation of the Kwacha were incorrect.

Namalomba said the IMF mission, which visited Malawi from September, 22 to October 6, 2026, recognised progress in the country’s economic reforms and the discussions are aimed at developing policies to support a new Extended Credit Facility programme.

He said government remains committed to addressing foreign exchange shortages, strengthening financial discipline, supporting production and reducing the cost of living.

He urged citizens, businesses and the media to rely on verified information from government and relevant monetary authorities.
