Police in Mangochi have advised members of the public who use cooking gas cylinders to regularly inspect their gas equipment before use.
The advise follows an incident involving a 21-year-old woman identified as Neliya Aufi who has been hospitalized at Mangochi District Hospital after sustaining burns when a cooking gas cylinder exploded while she was preparing supper inside her house.
Following the incident the Police has also urged, gas cylinder users to consult technicians on any defects they may observe.
According to Mangochi Police Station Public Relations Officer, inspector Amina Tepani Daudi, the incident occurred on May 7, at Chomba Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in the district.
Inspector Tepani Daudi says findings indicate that the cylinder accidentally exploded during the cooking process, resulting in burns to both of the victim’s arms and part of her face.
She says the fire also damaged part of the house, mainly the kitchen, together with several kitchen utensils.
Meanwhile, the value of the damaged property and the actual cause of the explosion are yet to be established.
