Minister of Labour, Skills and Innovation, Joel Chigona, says Malawi’s efforts to achieve decent work will depend on how quickly the country addresses ongoing labour challenges.
Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday ahead of Labour Day celebrations at Masintha Ground, Chigona said unemployment, low wages, delayed salaries and limited social protection remain major concerns affecting workers.
He said the theme for this year is a call for action, especially in promoting technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to equip people with practical skills.
“Achieving decent work means we must deal with unemployment, improve wages and invest in skills,” said Chigona.
Meanwhile, Malawi Congress of Trade Unions Treasurer General, Falison Lemani, said workers are still facing challenges such as high unemployment, low pay and delays in receiving salaries.
Malawi will commemorate Labour Day on May 1 under the theme: “Achieving Decent Work Through Promoting Workers’ Rights and Skills Development.”
