Malawi is expected to add 100 megawatts of electricity to the national grid by August this year as government moves to ease the country’s persistent power shortages.
Minister of Energy, Jean Mathanga, told Parliament on Tuesday that 50 megawatts will come from solar energy projects, while the remaining 50 megawatts will be supplied through the Malawi-Mozambique Power Interconnection Project.
Mathanga said the additional power is expected to reduce frequent electricity blackouts and improve supply from August.
The Minister was responding to concerns raised by Salima Central legislator, Enock Phale, who said his constituency has endured frequent outages for the past three months.
He noted that several lawmakers backed his concerns, describing the electricity crisis as a nationwide challenge.
Phale welcomed the Minister’s response, expressing hope that the additional generation will help restore a reliable electricity supply.
