FDRD Commends Mutharika Over Suspension of Mid-Year Budget Review Meeting

The Forum for Democracy and Rights Defenders (FDRD) has commended President Arthur Peter Mutharika for suspending the Mid-Year Budget Review meeting.
Speaking at a press briefing in Blantyre on Thursday, FDRD chairperson Shaibu Abdulrahman Ajasi said the move will allow government to redirect attention and resources towards addressing fuel challenges and preparing for the anticipated effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon.
Abdulrahman Ajasi said Mutharika has constitutional powers to suspend parliamentary meetings, arguing that the decision should therefore be viewed within the framework of the country's Constitution.
However, Abdulrahman Ajasi has urged government to provide an explanation to Malawians at a later stage on the benefits and implications of the suspension, particularly its impact on national development and service delivery.
He has also cautioned groups against rushing to organise demonstrations over the decision, warning that such actions could negatively affect the country's image.
Abdulrahman Ajasi said instead of the demonstrations, stakeholders can engage government through constructive dialogue and put national interests above political differences.
Meanwhile, Abdulrahman Ajasi has welcomed President Mutharika's return from South Africa, saying his return should enable him to fully resume his official duties following speculations surrounding his absence during the private trip.
