Opposition Leader Calls for Action on Stranded Malawians and Economic Challenges

Leader of Opposition, Simplex Chithyola Banda, has called on the government to take decisive action in addressing challenges affecting Malawians, including the plight of citizens reportedly stranded in South Africa and the country’s worsening economic situation.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Chithyola Banda urged authorities to act swiftly in assisting Malawians facing difficulties abroad, emphasizing that the welfare and protection of citizens should remain a top national priority.

The opposition leader also expressed concern over remarks reportedly made by Foreign Affairs Minister George Chaponda regarding issues involving Malawians of Ngoni descent. He cautioned that matters with the potential to create divisions should be handled carefully to preserve peace and national unity.

Chithyola Banda further raised concerns over governance issues, citing allegations of political intolerance and the weakening of key public institutions.

He said persistent economic hardships, including rising commodity prices, foreign exchange shortages and increasing unemployment, continue to place immense pressure on households across the country.

The opposition leader has since called for accountable leadership and the implementation of people-centred policies aimed at improving the livelihoods of Malawians.
