The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) expects to clear all outstanding audit queries raised in 2022 by December this year, Commissioner General Felix Tambulasi told parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Tuesday.

Tambulasi said most of the queries had been resolved, with the transfer of property title deeds to the MRA remaining the main outstanding issue.

He added that 14 applications are still pending at the Malawi Housing Corporation and Registrar General’s offices as part of the stamp-duty process.

“We hope that come December 2026 all the work will have been completed and we’ll have all the title deeds in the name of Malawi Revenue Authority,” Tambulasi said.

The MRA also said it had strengthened its finance department after an audit found that some employees in the department in 2022 were not sufficiently qualified.

PAC chairperson, Steven Baba Malondera, said the committee was concerned by an audit query involving PAYE, a tax that the MRA is mandated to collect, and that the committee had questioned the action taken against officers involved and was told some had been transferred to other departments.

He said the committee had received documentary evidence showing that the PAYE issue and other audit queries had been resolved, but would follow up on the outstanding title deeds after Decembe
