Government says it requires about US$200 million to complete the long-delayed Salima–Lilongwe Water Project, with authorities now targeting June, 2027 for its completion after securing fresh financial support.

Minister of Agriculture, Roza Mbilizi, disclosed this in Parliament on Thursday while responding to questions from legislators, saying government has intensified efforts to mobilise resources to ensure the strategic water supply project is completed within the revised timeframe.

Mbilizi acknowledged that persistent funding constraints had slowed implementation over the years but said the project has now begun receiving financial support, raising hopes that construction will gather pace.

The minister said government remains committed to delivering the project, which is expected to improve water supply to thousands of people once completed.

However, Salima Central West Member of Parliament, Enock Phale, expressed concern over the prolonged delays, telling Parliament that water shortages continue to worsen in areas earmarked to benefit from the project.

He urged government to expedite the works to ease the growing challenges faced by affected communities.
