The Federation of Disability Organisations in Malawi (FEDOMA) says many people
with disabilities their rights continue to be violated in many sectors, including
politics, because they do not hold decision-making positions, the remarks made
at a press briefing healed in Blantyre on the awareness month.
Speaking to Television Islam, FEDOMA Executive Director Simon Munde says
political parties’ need to have leaders of persons with disabilities to ensure people
with disabilities are taking part in decision-making processes as parties prepare for
next year’s general elections.
According to Munde, persons with disabilities need to be involved in
decisionmaking processes, and this can effectively be achieved if they are
elected into various leadership positions.
Meanwhile, Lyness Manduwa, Executive Director of Parents of Disabled Children
Association of Malawi (PODCAM) says women with disabilities are among those
still facing serious violations which need to be addressed.
This year’s awareness month is being remembered under the theme: “Amplifying
Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future”.
